All Stories, Literally Reruns

Literally Reruns -Trick or Treating in Germanville by Tobias Haglund

It’s been far too long since we had a piece by one of the original founders of LS. Maybe Leila pulling out this story will give him the push needed to send us something new. We can only hope.

Tobias Haglund is an intelligent and educated human being who “politely” assumes that his readers are as intelligent and educated as he is. The parentheses attached to politely are mine; Mr. Haglund seems genuinely pure of heart and would never allow a whiff of sarcasm directed at the reader to infiltrate his attitude, whilst I cannot go a paragraph without insulting someone on general principle.

Now, this is not meant to imply that Mr. Haglund is a wide-eyed innocent. To the contrary, he obviously knows that any reader of Trick-or-Treating in Germanville must enter it able to readily recognize three major figures from history or be utterly lost. That is a courageous and generous thing for him to do. Courageous because it shows proper disregard for ignorance and generous because he makes the reader feel as intelligent as he is.

Q: It seems that the hard won old knowledge is having a harder time “sticking” to modern students. I’ve heard that blamed on “information overload.” That’s nonsense. It’s just not being effectively taught. Does it bother you that there are so many newly professed socialists who know Marx only by name?

Q:  You excel at satire, allegory, and even at rhetoric. Is this more a product of your education or your own intellectual exploration?

Trick-or-Treating in Germanville

And here we have it: Mr Haglund

Q: It seems that the hard won old knowledge is having a harder time “sticking” to modern students. I’ve heard that blamed on “information overload.” That’s nonsense. A: Yes! But Marx is quite complicated and should be studied not just in political science but in history and many other subjects. You can disagree with someone’s teachings but still learn a lot!

Q:  You excel at satire, allegory, and even at rhetoric. Is this more a product of your education or your own intellectual exploration?

A: Thank you very much. You would not believe it from my writing but I am a decently educated person (most readers only believe me to be an educated indecent person). Although I think my years of being an academic overlap with having an honest interest in literature, rhetorics, history, poltitics, economics and many other subjects. Another time I will tell you about my dishonest interest in other subjects (not even mentioning my honest disinterest in certain subjects). Speaking of life-long learning: Right now I am working full-time and studying full-time even though my studies are technically “done”. In my studies I’m currently reading Plato’s The State to compare book 6 and 7 to Schumpeter for a Political science course at university. Why? I will answer in a rhetorical stylistic figure*: Because life’s too interesting to close your mind, too exhilarating to feel done, and too fascinating to not keep taking courses.

Tricolon for those that wondered. The purpose was to connect the ending with the beginning, brag a little bit and also to make you, the reader, dislike me a little bit more.

  1. Hi Leila,
Your usual excellent choice and input which adds to not only the story but our appreciation of the writer.

Tobias – I think you will always be a student on all aspects of life, you have that curiosity and courtesy to give every part consideration. My own problem is I can only learn what interests me. As soon as I get bored, I just think life is too short. (Life is also too short for folding sheets, folding towels, getting haircuts and filling the car with fuel. Not doing these cause a multitude of issues in varying degrees of seriousness!)

Thanks so much to both of you!
    Hugh
