I hope Leila remembers about trails of breadcrumbs. She is going deep into the darkness now and we don’t know what will happen if the canary is busy. She found a piece from 2015 and this is what she said:
Darlene P Compos’ Pow Wow Travels is an understated gem that deserves to once again be in the spotlight, where it may take a well deserved bow. There’s grand humor and a naturalistic ease to this piece; not once does it feel forced nor “connived.” I believe what I admire most is the characters ‘ refusal of self pity.
Q: The way you eased in Lucy’s suicide and her joy so quickly and effectively is something you ought to be proud of. Did you have any trouble selecting the method you told of her death, or did it come about naturally?

Since I wrote that story years ago, I don’t remember what it’s fully about. However, I do remember that the Lucy portion came from a co-worker of my mother. I went to school with her co-worker’s daughter and she commented to me that she had seen a woman who looked just like her daughter at the grocery store and she wanted to say hello, but she didn’t. Her daughter committed suicide when we were in 9th or 10th grade and it was very tragic and something I still think about.
Q: Mr. Eagle is a most delightful character. Is he based on someone you know?
The character of Mr. Eagle is the great-grandfather of Nimo, a character from my debut novel. They share similar humor.

Also, the canary I take into the mines has a three pack a day Newport habit and spends his nights sleeping in an iron lung. He works cheep, and has just informed me that there’s a special hole in hell for persons who employ puns like the one at the head of this sentence.

I know that my comments are same ol’ same ol’ but as always brilliant choice. (Is that ol’ correct – I’m not sure – Should there be an e??)
Does someone need to tell you – probably not – Do I want to tell you – Hell yes!!
Darlene – I love your answer where you state that you are not sure what your story is fully about. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that and it’s a very honest comment. I truly believe that some stories are only there because of a feeling of that moment.
It was brilliant to see this get another light of day!!
