Before I forget, I’ll answer the riddle that I set on Week 602.
What completes the list?
sore
keel
cosh mark
???
The first three are anagrams of the National Symbols of England (Rose), Wales (Leek), Ireland (Shamrock)
So the fourth has to be:
The list
That is an anagram for Scotland’s (Thistle)
I was being a bit unfair as there was a distinct advantage from this side of the pond!
I despise trigger warnings! ‘Adult Content’ should suffice. But due to me despising the specifics of those warnings, all I will say is – If you are a sensitive, you should probably read something else!!
Just the other day I read something that emphasises this sensitive nonsense.
There’s a kids TV programme called ‘Horrible Histories’. It tries to teach kids about some of the more unpleasant events in time gone by.
In their wisdom (??) the BBC have scrubbed an episode which was a skit about children chimney sweeps in the Victorian era. The reason that it was scrapped was due to the line that the gaffer said to the kids just before they were sent up a chimney –
‘Try not to die!’
Good on the narrow minds and pish protectiveness of the BBC. Kids today may think that this was a hoot. They probably think that those poor kids made a fortune by influencing soap sales.
Why can’t they be told the simple truth that most of these Victorian kids did not survive? They were lucky to get out of their teenage years!!
It’s ridiculous!
Ignoring the facts of history is a very dangerous road to go down!!
My family is increasing. My nephew and his partner are having their second sprog.
My note to self…Don’t express any idea that the kid is being brought into a completely fucked up world and there’s every chance that it’ll see even more death and destruction than OUR great grandparents ever did.
I can’t mention the worsening devastating weather, the lack of a job market or Musk seeking ever lasting life and world domination to give him something to do until he blows up the whole fucking lot.
New diseases will be a thing. I don’t know what they’ll be but they’ll involve parts of our anatomy falling off! Kids will have no intellect what-so-ever as they’ll be drooling vegetables due to them staring at some form of screen since they were born. There’ll be no human interaction as that’ll be considered weird. And the world will finally drown as all the selfies taken will come alive and compete for the last mirror on earth.
I don’t know what will happen to the rest of the mirrors??
The reason that I was in such a melancholy mood was due to last week, I’m just getting over last it!! I was on the 3.30pm bus going to my doctor’s appointment. It was fifteen minutes late which meant, not only had I to endure the fucking wee weans as they came out at 3.30, I also had to put up with the pubescents. I’m not sure which lot is worse as they are both noisy ignorant fuckwits. I spent my bus trip wanting for it to go on fire. I knew that they couldn’t scream any louder. I’d have been in a happy place knowing that the wee mutants wouldn’t grow up. (Don’t think they would anyway!)
Now my scenario might be a bit harsh but I care not a jot.
Think of all the disappointment it would save them from. You see, when their idiot parents need to go into a nursing home, the kids will have fuck all left as the government will take all the houses and assets of their parents. When those noisy wee fucks end up with nothing apart from a couple of drooling parents, they will probably wish that there had been a fire on that very bus!!!!
This got me thinking, Peter Griffin should give lessons!!!
Oh – I’ve probably made jesus cry yet again and I’m going to hell – But silver linings and all that…The fire on the bus will have prepared me!
On to this week’s stories. We had two new writers and three well established story tellers.
To the new folks, we welcome them, hope that they have fun on the site and most importantly, we hope to see more of their work.
First up was Marco Etheridge with his twenty ninth story for us entitled, ‘Penny Catch.’
‘It wouldn’t matter if a reader didn’t know about these characters.’
‘Marco can write around anything.’
‘This is a better Pennywise than Stephen King’s!’
On Tuesday we had our very own Leila. She has an amazing amount of stories! One hundred and forty three and counting.
‘Amelia In Waiting’ was her story for Tuesday.
‘As always Leila displays excellent wordage.’
‘Super tone.’
‘The hints and foreshadowing were beautifully handled.’
Fred K. Foote has graced the site one hundred and one times, ‘The Landovers.’ was his latest.
‘One of his best.’
‘Fred can take on anything.’
‘Another touch of class from Fred.’
Russell Dupont was our first new writer. His story was called, ‘I don’t like to complain.’ It was published on Thursday.
‘Very recognisable.’
‘It makes you want to read it all the way through.’
‘Happy that this is being published.’
We finished off the week with ‘Bangkok, If You’re Listening’ by Prin Sairungsri. Prin was our next new writer.
‘This is mesmerising.’
‘A really good story.’
‘Great writing.’
That’s us for another week.
Keep doing what you’re doing folks, it keeps the site alive!
Read.
Write.
Comment.
Say thanks!!
Repeat.
Before a piece of music, I’d just like to show this. At the beginning of this posting, I wasn’t too hopeful for human kind but this gives me hope.
No joking or mucking about, this genuinely brings a lump to my throat.
If you don’t know anything about these guys, look them up. They deserve as much coverage as possible.
I noticed that it would have been Phil Oakey of ‘The Human League’s’ 70th birthday on the 2nd October. I like the guys voice. This is one of those songs that I shouldn’t like but I do. It was a toss up between this one and ‘Together In Electric Dreams.’
This one won!!

I had to do this Hugh as you had chosen to highlight this amazing man. And though we never normally would do this https://donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/7-in-7-the-grand-finale I hope nobody minds that and there is no pressure from this site but if you need the link then there it is.

Hello Hugh
Awesome post
At least it is a geographical influenced riddle–that way I do not feel as stupid!
Sinfield is a tremendous human being. Also proof that you got to put in the work to be good. just can’t throw social posts or even just cash at things (though cash is always good to donate–I have two places that I donate to monthly and I aint no Sinfield). Amazing that any human being can actually do the thing he is doing. And he must be past forty! ALS, MND are the cruellest ones. The body slowly shuts down leaving the mind utterly aware of the trouble. Often the patients are turned into junkers so they aren’t as depressed. That’s a hell of a thing too, but at least it might help, a little.
Big fan of the Human League–much to the detriment of me by my unwashed hard rocker friends. Some people have no range in musical taste!

Hi Hugh
I hear what you’re saying about these ass-wipes scrubbing the shit off histories’ ass. The simple truth is will do. But they literally forget that history, as cliche’, does repeat.
Your view of the future seems more like prophesy! Send those screamers up the chimney!
Great stuff as always!
