Week 592 – R.I.P The AP, Julius Is Second And No Nail Varnish.

Another week, another Saturday Posting!

Week 592 if I’m not mistaken.

I wondered why I had so many random stories this week. But I realised why, I held the newspapers back and hadn’t read them for a few days, most of this nonsense, I found today. It’s actually a bit of fortune as I had very little to go on. What I did have can wait for another day.

I see that the Michael Jackson’s film has become the most successful biopic in history. It just goes to show that being a paedophile will never hold a black and white story back!

I think Gary Glitter is writing a screen play from his jail cell.

I also read that there has been a study and the male of the species brain shrinks when he becomes a father.

I think that’s another ‘No shit Sherlock!’moment. Baby talk and soft voices will never get you invited to a pub quiz. And if you really do think you have sensitive nipples, for fuck sake, don’t tell anyone!!!

I’m not sure about Lewis Hamilton putting his dog on a Vegan Diet?? Well that’s unless he is letting his dog eat Vegans?? Fuck! That would be something else they would be going on about!

There is a reason that animals have teeth. He has stated that his mutt is healthier now. But let’s be honest, Vegans can make a great case for their brittle-boned children, so there’s no point in arguing with them!!

It is the end of a habit of a lifetime for me. I decided last week that it was time to stop reading my local paper. I don’t want to stop reading it but I need to for the sake of pure principle. In the last year it has went up from £2.00 to £3.70. It is also a third of the size that it used to be. Even any mad letters have been replaced with the not so mad and terminally boring! I can’t remember the last time that I saw anything worth repeating. Advertisements are all but gone. There are no wedding or baby pictures to laugh at and no pleasant surprises at the obituaries. It makes the beer taste all the better when you read that a twat is dead! I could seek all that out on Social Media, but it will be a cold day in hell before I succumb to that!!!

I’ve been reading that paper for over fifty years. I may think about giving up sarcasm and swearing next!!

Onto this week’s stories. We had a returner and four new writers to the site. To all the new folks, we wish them well, hope that they have fun on the site and most importantly, we hope to see more of their work!

On Monday we had our returner.

Charles Sutphin started the week with, ‘The Soul Counter.’ It was great to see him back.

‘The tone was very good and judged perfectly’

‘The MC was a bit naive.’

‘This is plenty good.’

Mr Terence’ by Rick Moss was our first first-timer. He was published on Tuesday.

‘Quite mysterious.’

‘This ended very strongly.’

‘It was about the verbiage as much as anything.’

We broke the back of the week with ‘(Sleep) Walking London’ by Akio Le.

‘Weird but I liked it!’

‘Really interesting. It sucked you in and you wanted to know where the writer was taking you.’

‘This is worth a few reads. I’m sure that you will get more out of it with each read.’

Charlotte L. Sworn was next up on Thursday with, ‘Five Millimetres From The Rim.

‘This was done well.’

‘At first I thought the ending was a bit fast but fair play to Charlotte, it worked well.’

‘I think most of us have a touch of OCD in one form or the other.’

And we finished off with ‘Manorial Roll’ by Ann Tlusty.

‘This told three little tales bit by bit.’

‘This amused me!’

‘This was great fun to read.’

That was the week that was all reviewed and neatly put to bed.

Always the same reminders, please read, submit, comment and say thanks to those who have commented on your story!

Before some music, I want to let you read one of those scenario type things. It’s one of those where the answer doesn’t matter but it tells you more about yourself than anyone else.

It’s a bit like Poul Anderson’s ‘The Devil’s Game’. That book is worth a look and it doesn’t take very long to read it.

There were two brothers. James was very successful, rich, had a family that wanted for nothing and was unscrupulous in getting what he wanted. William was poor, down on his luck, sailed close to the wind and was what could have been described as an embarrassment to the family.

They got into a discussion and were arguing about what was the best thing that god had ever done. One brother stated that he thought that God’s best work was giving humankind a conscience. The other brother took a few seconds, nodded and agreed. The first one was happy about this and stated, ‘That’s the only reason I haven’t killed you’

The question is who would have asked that?

I found this little teaser and it caught me out. I was disgusted that I didn’t get it! It would be embarrassing to tell you how long it took me before I gave up!

What five letter word reads the same when upside down or right-side up?

If no-one can answer, I’ll try and remember to post it next time.

This piece of music is something that I came across a week or so back and I really did enjoy it.

I think both of them had been at some sort of pharmaceuticals but to be fair, whatever it was, it didn’t affect their singing.

What the hell, I need something darker! ‘The Sister’s Of Mercy’ will do just fine!

I played the ‘Floodland’ album to death late eighties, early nineties.

Thought provoking. I’d say the younger brother–he would because a conscience is a good thing to have and the other acted without one. The Free Soul was probably disgusted and would have if he could have.

Going on the premise that the only three letters that look the same up and down are O, upper case H and I, I still cannot figure a word long enough that would include all three–so, I’m beginning to think I have my letters wrong and maybe the cases as well, could be a mix.

Making a Dog a vegan is as stupid as making one go to church (although it would end with the same result). The guy who is doing that is a self involved asshole. I’d like to see him offer greens to a pride of Lions then watch what happens!

    Great again!

    1. Hi Leila,

      Thanks as always.

Your idea of a vegan feeding a lion a lettuce is a belter!

Hope the lion is hungry as he would understand that lettuce is food too but he’d be too full after consuming the Vegan with gusto. (HAH! Read that line whatever way you want!).

The brother question, I think it depends on how we feel when we read it.

      Thanks again – Much appreciated!!

  2. Good post and recap. I went digital on our local paper and dropped it altogether when the jacked up the price. Two good videos. I’d never seen Greg Allman and Cher perform together. Their performance gave me a Leon Russell vibe for some reason. Is IHOHI a word?

    1. Hi David,

I refuse to read a paper on a tablet. Just won’t be the same.

I’d never saw that Cher / Allman performance until a few weeks back when there was one of those ‘Cher At The BBC’ things on the TV.

IHOHI – It could be a word, maybe Gaelic!!! They speak weird!!

Thanks so much for your continual commenting – Much appreciated!!

  3. Hi Hugh

A lot of fun here! Don’t tell them about the sensitive nipples is a corker! Sorry I tried to sound British or something–out of my depth…

Sad sign of the Times or the Journal. They just don’t make them like they used to, very thin and sanitized. And the hell with that price jump! My favorite section was the local crime blotter–seeing which one of my drunk pals got the Saturday night DWI or assault charge.

That’s literally nuts about the vegan dog. I’ll bet he’s waiting to rip his master’s throat out to get some protein.

    1. Hi Christopher,

We are told to share virtually everything now-a-days – Surely ailments should be personal!!

As the newspaper became dearer and thinner, the crimes became more serious.

When I was a kid it was all about the odd road crash or a lost dog. Now we have murders, rapes and robberies and there ain’t many words spent on them!

I think a dog on a vegan diet would want to say – I’m only eating this shit because I’m hungry!!

Thanks as always my fine friend.

Hope life is being kind to you.

  4. Good post. I thought I was home and dry with the puzzle, because I’d realised that N is also the same upside down as I O & H. But still can’t find the answer. Hey ho.

Had seen that The Ayrshire Post had gone up to £3.70. The Stirling Observer has gone up to….£3.60. They are both part of the Mirror Group of newspapers. The local Falkirk paper (not owned by the Mirror Group) is only half the price.

    1. Hi Mick,

I hadn’t thought of the newspaper groups dictating price. They try to recoup falling sales with increased prices and shrinkage – That seldom works. The punter gets wise to that.

It did take me a few years though!!!

I’ll post the answer to the word next time.

Hope life is being kind to you and yours.

  5. hello. I gave up buying newspapers years ago and I’ll be blower if I’ll pay for on line articles. I do with the BBC news hadn’t been so dumbed down though. I think it was William because it’s already stated that William is unscrupulous

I’m still puzzling over the word!. Great post. Thank you. dd

    1. Hi Diane,

As I’ve said, the brothers question says more about who is thinking on it. The logical try to look at it logically. The optimists will look it another way as will the pessimists. It probably also has a smidgen to do with your opinion on humankind!

I hate the BBC news as it has become that old Frank Bough teatime magazine shite, ‘Nationwide’. There are too many lame human interest and zany stories.

      I despise all magazine programmes!!!

      Thanks as always.

Hope you and yours are fine and well.

  6. Hi Hugh!
Regarding your jab on fathers which is very deserved in too many cases, I also know lots of MARRIED MEN, whether or not they have children, who perfectly fit that description of fathers you’ve provided!!!
I’m not saying all married men fall into this category, by any means.
But I’ve seen TOO MANY married men who are constantly at the beck-and-call of their wives not to know that it’s a thing.
And I’ve seen too many MARRIED MEN too terrified of asking for the alone time they are desperately craving, not to know that this is also very much “a thing.”
And I’ve also seen far too many married men willing to do things like ignore their original family when their new wife tells them to, not to also know this is very much a huge problem in Western society (and, to me, a straight-up SIN, IF there is such a thing as sin, that is).
But it isn’t all married men. And in the same way, I don’t think it’s all fathers, either. Some fathers stay away from the mothers so they can do whatever they want whenever they want. Not sure their brains have shrunk in that case and I’m pretty sure their nipples are just fine. SOME married men (with or without children), however (NOT ALL!), I’m not so sure.
    Thanks for thought-provoking commentary!

    1. Hi Dale,

You have brilliantly taken your article on husband and the unmarried and it has become an observation on humankind with all their insecurities.

I had two friends and if I asked them if they and their wives would like to go out, they always stated that they’d need to ask. I could never understand that. If either myself or Gwen had that call, we would be able to speak for each other. She would know who I couldn’t be arsed with and I knew who she couldn’t be arsed with. She knew where I wouldn’t go and I knew the same about her. Not that we were ever a ‘We’ couple…I hate them! We simply gauged how much one didn’t want to do something against how much the other did and we could answer from there.

I’ve always believed that a man becomes a man when he can respect a woman as she is. And a woman is a woman when she can respect a man as he is!

Thanks as always my fine friend, you always make me think!!
