I have selected a story I remember from four years ago, Elsa, by early LS mainstay, Tobias Haglund. I wanted to see if it had grown or, at very least, retained its freshness. Sometimes a piece will mildew from neglect, but this was not the case with Elsa.
A couple of questions arose in my mind after reading the story again. Then I thought, “Well, why not just ask Mr. Haglund about it?” Initially, I was suspicious of this advice from within because it is also the place where my bad ideas live. Upon further scrutiny, however, I have decided to give it a go.
LA: Elsa is a fine short story that surpasses the sum of its parts. I was wondering, did you actively select the imagery of the water droplets gathering into small streams then separating into divergent flows as a metaphor for Elsa’s situation, or was this imagery something that came about organically through the process of creating the story?
LA: Are there words in Swedish that have no match in English? Words whose subtlety are lost in translation?

The Q & A is a nice addition. Good story selection from Leila, as always. Tobias’ ability to write in a second language is amazing. I speak French pretty well, but write it at probably the second grade level. On a good day.

Mr Haglund is our benchmark when it comes to ESL writers and they really do have something to live up to – As do we all when comparing his work!!
