The Orb by Aishwarya Srivastava

They called it The Orb because “What the actual….!!!!!” did not sound proper in physics journals.

It appeared on a random Tuesday, a bright, globe-like structure hanging next to the Moon. Telescopes were pulled out (a great tussle ensued to display who has the biggest one), and astrophysicists learned it’s a small burning body, moon-sized, a few million miles from the moon.

The Lunar Landings—a lofty achievement for mankind. Today, 3 billion miles from Earth, two hundred years later, I’m passing Pluto. But only in the company of a doomed ghost ship named the Achilles. All fuel reserves and chances of returning home vanished with my crew.

The Interlopers by Robert Buckalew

I clung to her leg like a cowering koala. Crouched at her feet I was passive, self protective. The other woman talked to her only. She was proposing to me through my wife. She wanted me to become her betrothed. I listened as the women stood facing each other until the proposal was over. When they were through and in agreement my wife graciously looked down at me for any response I might have. I looked up at her and silently nodded, then nuzzled the apex of her jeans in appreciation, wishing I could do more through the heavy cloth material. I was ecstatic.
