Literally Reruns – Bubbles by Diane M Dickson

Whenever I read of domestic abuse I always think “If anyone did that to me, he’d be picking up teeth.” Fortunately, that has never been put to task in my world, but if so, would I react as I say? I really don’t know, I might go for an eye instead.

Still, the purposeful physical and economic control over another human being is a form of terrorism that’s among the lowest of all human behaviors. And in Diane Dickson’s Bubbles we see a brave break for freedom made at the highest cost.

Q: I always ask this of writers of something they did long ago; but at least eight years gone by this holds up very well. I hope you feel the same.

Q: Do you believe this explains more than one “mystery suicide”?

Q: Bonus–how did the comparison of the bubbles arise?

Another very old story but I do remember this one. For a while I wrote a fair bit about spousal abuse and that fed into my very first published novel. I generally dislike things when I revisit them but it’s nice to see them featured again. If I was writing it now I might change some of it but even the great Terry Pratchett said that about The Colour of Magic (his first in the discworld series) so I suppose it could just be an author thing.

In a sadly ironic twist of fate I have found in a very difficult and personal way that this is probably more true than we care to believe.

I love bubbles. I still buy those little tubs of bubbles with a plastic loop to blow into. Bubble bath, and yes, washing up bubbles – all those tiny little rainbows – and then because I have a strange turn of thought I have to go and get maudlin!

Happy to see this up today. I would say “bubble up”–but that doesn’t match the tone of the piece (yet I said it anyway). It holds up well, and I think it always will. Hopefully it will someday be an artifact of a behavior gone by.

    1. Thank you for choosing this scribble for an extra day in the sun. it would be nice to think there would be a time when this sort of thing wouldn’t be an issue but we’re a long way off yet I reckon.

  2. Hi ladies,
This is one of those that I recognised as soon as I began to read it.
I wonder if it is still the case if there is a note left then the insurances companies refuse to pay out??
Maybe if anyone who did this really wanted some revenge, they should have sent one!
With that thought in mind – ‘Library Of The Dead’ by Glen Cooper is worth a read.
I also like bubbles – In my Lager, Champagne, Black Rum and Ginger Ale etc.
All the very best my lovely friends!
