Literally Reruns, Short Fiction

Literally Reruns: Bingo by Hugh Cron

Oh my oh my, after reading Bingo, I wondered what kind of father our beloved Hugh Cron would be. Actually, I think he would be an excellent parent because he would never bullshit his kids about Santa, organized religion or “The Farm” where pets go, mysteriously, all of a sudden while the child is in school. “Sparky decided he will be happy, there, at The Farm,” Papa said, wiping his eyes due to a sudden recurrence of his “allergies.”

Anyway, however you cut it, this evil little MC is a wonder to behold. Some might say “I feel terrible about liking this.” Don’t–nothing wrong with admiring fictional MC psychopaths. We are all a little evil inside. That’s why we can identify with the Hannibal Lectors in the pages and how come we would much rather root for Rickman over Costner and Willis. ‘T is only natural.

I now hand this to Hugh. I wonder where this girl came from and hope to read anything else you might have to say on the subject of Bingo.

Leila

Hi Leila,

Thanks as always for choosing one of my stories!

I think the inspiration for this was me considering most parents believing that their kids are little angels and I wanted to explore this.

I’ve always wondered, are we born good and either learn or circumstance points us to a darker path. Or, are we we born dark and learn humanity?? Obviously there are exceptions and off-shoots.

Was this kid born evil?? I don’t normally try to get too much into my characters head, I let the circumstances tell the story. But in this case, I did think that she was evil.

I don’t think I put across in words what was in my head. I had her being jealous of her brother, the dog and his train set. I toyed (HAH!) with a few hints but they came across as clumsy so I left them out.

That same thinking kept this story very short and when I read it back I was happy with the punch at the end.

Cheers again Leila, I always get a blast out of these.

  1. Yes, I remember reading this story. Lianne has the characteristics similar to Adam Family’ Wednesday. One of Hugh’s stories that ends with a conflicted punch, leaving a moment of gasping horror.

  2. Hi James,

Thanks for your time and comment. Much appreciated!!

The one thing I wonder about this story was, where the hell did I get the name Lianne from???

For the life of me, I can’t remember why I used it!!

Hope you and yours are happy and well.

  3. Hugh,

I add that this matches well with your post about (partially) humour, yesterday. This is funny. I mean I am willing to wager that the end (or, to be fancy, denoument) causes more slight, evil smiles than it does looks of aghast. Well maybe a bit of aghast about Bingo, but sardonic grins for the boy. Then again I might be a sick sociopath myself.

    1. Hi Leila,

With what you have just said I had to check with my eyes half shut!

I was pleased to see that I hadn’t categorised this as humour!!

That could be a list for you,’Funny Evil’!! Like Dick Dastardly, Rickman’s Sheriff Of Nottingham, Edmund BlackAdder, Dr Evil, cats and wee Greta…No, she’s not evil, not saintly either, just fucking annoying!!!

Thanks again, I enjoyed thinking on what I was thinking of!!

  4. Whoa. Your reputation preceded you, Hugh. So I should’ve seen the punchline coming. But I didn’t. And what a punchline! bw mick

    1. Hi Mick,

      Thanks so much!!

I am proud of two last lines, this one and the one at the end of ‘Do The Right Thing.’

They both put across the point and both of them could make me feel guilty about sniggering!!

Hope all is well with you my fine friend.
