This is as good a first story that we have had is up there with the best of them.
The story is heartbreaking and the social observations are spot on.
The image of the spiral is clever and can be looked at on many levels, not just within the plot of this story. We all have our own spirals.
I loved the line about him stopping from running. There is a very old film with Jimmy Cagney, ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’ and it had the same thinking. One boy got caught and one didn’t. It only meant that one couldn’t run as fast and that was what shaped their lives.
To me you have touched on so much; limitations, expectations, social standing and all the racism and bigotry that shapes us. But none of this should matter if we all accepted each other as human beings first.
Hopefully one day we will all travel up our own spirals but I don’t think we are there yet.
This has stayed with me since I first read it.
