The Montagues’ and Capulets’ disapproval of an ill-fated union was mirrored by the opprobrium this couple aroused in their Australian families. She was practical and ambitious while he gave imagination a free pass, a kind of poor man’s negative capability. What he wanted to do and what others wanted him to do, were not the same. Feeling hounded, they found work together in the U.S. Always happiest when fleeing responsibility, the sheer glorious relief, he hadn’t faced this fact yet. Without telling any relatives, they left their troubles all behind, or so they thought. When the U.S. didn’t work out, visas cancelled, they crossed the Atlantic.

The swing squeaks and bucks high up into the sky, its ancient chains straining against the pull of gravity. The boy shoots his legs out violently, pumping them up as far as he possibly can before falling back hard onto the seat, enjoying the thrill of his body leaving the earth. Rusted metal poles rise up from the ground, wood chips and random debris scattering with every pass he makes. He can’t go any higher, yet keeps on trying, constantly testing his boundaries.

Yo yo yo, I’m here to tell ya about a boy named Sue.
Every day, Sue went into school, in the little pigtails his Momma put him in and his little blue bonnet on his head, and all the children sang, “FUCKIN’ PUSSY!” They danced around him in tribal fashion, and spit bubble gum in his ears, and tried to make him eat dirt. Every day he would soil his pretty little yellow dress, skin his knees and run home crying to Momma.
