All Stories, Christmas Crime Week 2025

Loch Ness Monster by Steven French

In the world of crime “Boxing Day” often creates its own meaning. Usually something a bit more prosaic than switching places with the Master, unless, of course, his Lordship is in need of “crating” for shipment.

Loch Ness Monster by Steven French is also something whose title can be taken in more than one way. Utterly brilliant, this piece brings out the self head slap and Why didn’t I think of that? in every writer. Steven did, and he handled the subject with perfection.

The stories this week have been brilliant, each one a work of art in the otherwise dubious field of crime.

Yours is a triumph in its own right; simple, elegant and it delivers a twist so sublime thst it makes jealous!

    1. Thanks so much Leila! Hope you’re having a wonderful Boxing Day (I just ate my body weight in bubble and squeak so I definitely am!)

  2. I remember this from its previous appearance. Good to see it again. It also pops back up into my memory sometimes, driving on that A9 through the Highlands. Nice writing. mick

  3. Wow! I really enjoyed this story! It has a beautiful misdirection. I felt like I was there riding along across the bridge that was “so long it needed to be painted again, when they were done.” Great images!

I got caught up wondering if I would glimpse The Monster? The story of the boy thinking he saw the monster (which was a log) was an excellent set up.

Then the irony of this killer dropping bodies into the Loch and the dark humor of them floating up for kids to point at like the corpse was The Loch Ness Monster was pretty great. There really is a Loch Ness Monster!
