Gerald Coleman has created a fantastic fictional character named “Billy Olsen.” But like all fantastic fictional characters, Billy is as real as anyone living because of the experience, observation and talent laid into him by his creator. Out of His League is both the first appearance by Gerry and Billy and we think that readers who missed it the first time around should catch a break and gain a second opportunity.

Now, a few words from the author…
“Out of His League” was my first published story. I sold it for $50 to a trendy, beachy Sarasota, Florida magazine, the sort that features articles on skin care and Gulf front real estate. My wife died two months earlier. I guess God let one slip by.
I had the ending in my head for some time. Perfect people always gave me the creeps. They have nothing to compensate for.

Dear Gerry
See under the story itself for more comments by me on this great story whenever you get a chance! This piece is eminently worthy of a reprint at every level!

Even though I’d read this before the ending is still so very moving. Beautifully observed, deeply humane, and deeply human with characters full of longing, self-doubt, and quiet grace.

It would be nice to achieve quiet grace once in a while, if even. Thank you. — gerry

Terrible loss involving your wife. But you got it right, no such thing as a perfect couple, but I am inclined to think that is a good thing.
As is this story, a very good thing.

I’m inclined to believe you’re right. Perfect creatures have no need for each other — only themselves. Thanks! — gerry

Hi Gerry,
I had a look back at my initial comments and just want to emphasise something.
This is a a masterclass on balancing a story. Simply what to say, what not, what to leave and what to tell.
Balance is something that is hard to explain but obvious when it is done badly. That happens so many times. This is one of the best examples which shows how to do it perfectly!!
All the very best my fine friend.
