To locate this Holiday Rerun, I had to go way the hell back in the vault to find this wonderful little piece by our own Diane M Dickson. Mary, Joseph and the Baby is truer to the spirit of the occasion than anything you can buy at Amazon and the dialect is musical. Unique but it gets across.
It’s an old story in many ways, but blessed are the poor and meek no matter what the corporations say.
Now let’s have Diane come out on stage before the show begins….
I’ll admit I’d forgotten about this one and when I read it I realised it’s just a bit more ‘gentle’ than the stuff I’ve written lately, but it was sort of nice in it’s way I thought so thank you Leila and Hugh for giving it a minute in the limelight.

This works because Mary and Joe have a general positive attitude about their situation, though hardly gleaming. Karen apparently has advantages and yet saw only the bad. Wonderful language, even to my foreign “ear,” it was clear.

Thank you Leila – I read yesterday that in Liverpool the homeless numbers are worse than ever before. What a disgrace and a shame it is.

The tragedy appears to be the same everywhere, especially in the West. Yesterday our mayor proposed an “emergency low barrier” shelter that should open NEXT winter. The word emergency must not be in the city’s vocabulary.

Poignant with never a hint of mushiness. Great dialogue writing. Thank you.

Effective use of dialect and the references to the Biblical story breathe life into the piece. An excellent story for Christmas week.

Hi Diane,
It’s always a pleasure to see you on this side of the site!
I feel all nostalgic as this was first published when we were only one month and a day old!
Hope you and Ian and the chuckies are having a stonking time over the holidays!!
