Ian Ibbetson recently retired and moved to a wonderful wee island just off the west coast of Scotland. He has been a writer of one sort or another for most of his life. He has written newsletters, press releases, business plans and pitches, funding applications, adverts, and even the occasional birthday card. In his spare time he has even scratched out the occasional bit of poetry. But until finding this site, he hadn’t written fiction since he left school, more than half a century ago.
In his working life Ian became a jack-of-all-trades with experience spanning heavy industry, transport, the third sector, artisan food production, hospitality, e-commerce, and a few other bits. Somehow he also found time to be involved in voluntary work and local politics.
Taking a break as a mature student, Ian first studied History and Historiography at Ruskin College, Oxford. Historiography always interested him more than history itself; why was it told this way, who was it written for, and what internal or external constraints shaped the story were the questions that really interested him. Those questions eventually led him to Sussex University, where he opted for Media Studies with Cultural and Community Studies rather than History.
Despite having been politically active in the past, these days Ian is less interested in party politics than in the systems and structures that shape contemporary issues. He now spends much of his time reading and writing about politics, technology, history, media, community, and the strange ways they collide. Sometimes he rants. Sometimes he reasons. Occasionally, he even changes his mind, but if you’re looking to him for tribal loyalties, you’ll probably be disappointed.
