The communal bathroom was a lot cleaner than she thought it would be. This was the first time that she’d been in. She reckoned dust would be more of a problem than shit as everyone must have used their en-suites.

Chloe sat on the toilet and wished that she owned a pair of slippers. Her feet were so cold. She picked at a ragged nail on her little toe knowing if she didn’t stop it would start to bleed. She thought it strange that she would see the blood before she felt the pain. Numb! She was numb. She reckoned she had been that way for most of her adult life. A tear threatened to build up in the corner of her eye but she wiped it away. There was no point in that. No point what-so-ever. Chloe pulled her dressing gown tighter as she began to shiver. She looked at her watch and wondered how long it took for five minutes to go by. The question made her smile but it didn’t make her feel any better.

Linda crept along the corridor. For once she had to be respectful of the hour as she didn’t want to draw any attention. She couldn’t disturb any of them. They all knew who she was. She opened the door from the room corridors to the entrance to the stairwell. That was where the statue was. The Armadillo. It looked more like a gold painted croissant. Calling it tacky was doing it justice. Calling the place a hotel was a travesty. Everyone knew it was a half-way house. She knocked on the bathroom door.

A whisper came from within.

“Someone is in here.”

“It’s me.”

The door opened and Chloe peered out.

“Thank fuck! No-one saw you did they?”

Linda shook her head. They both looked around and Chloe pulled her in.

“Are you sure?”

“I’m as sure as I can be.”

“Is he sleeping?”

Linda snorted, “The bastard is snoring like a pig. What about yours?”

“Same. I nicked a few litres of White Lightning. He drank most of it last night and won’t be waking anytime soon. He was well fucked up. It was actually quite funny. He tried to tell me he loved me, the lying prick!”

“It’s amazing what they say during a blowjob! I never knew a flaccid prick could come until I did my first junky. I was like What’s the point..Oh there you go!

Chloe covered her mouth as she choked back her sniggers.

“Fuck! I was just thinking the same!”

Her laugh became a grimace. She was shaking. Linda rubbed at her arms.

“Cold or worry?”

“What the fuck do you think? He’d kill me if he knew.”

Linda smiled and nodded.

“That would make two of us. George is just as bad. He has a terrible temper. He’s only interested in himself and can be a right evil fucker. He burnt me with my straighteners once.”

She pulled her ear forward and tilted her head.

“Fuck that looks as if it would hurt.”

“It did, he told me my cunt would be next.”

I know what you mean. I think that’s why we get on so well. We’re both the same. We’ve both got selfish sadistic bastards for men.”

“I think they get pleasure out of it. Hurting I mean. If he’s not slapping me, he’s telling me that I’m ugly.”

“Yep, that’s a broken record from my so called partner. As if he’s a fucking oil painting!”

They stared into each other. They both leaned forward and hugged.

Linda touched her cheek with the back of her hand.

Are you sure this is what you want to do?”

Chloe took a deep breath and nodded.

“Yes. We need this. Fuck them!”

“If they find out they’ll fucking kill us!”

“But if they knew we had it, neither of us would get any. This way we share.
We’ll be asleep when they go out for their methadone. They won’t wake us in case we want to go with them. Don’t worry.”

She reached out.

Linda nodded and took out the small bag of brown powder.

  1. This is a dangerous place for the ladies. But unlike the men they hold the smack thus the world. I have four years knowing on the subject, and it can kill in one of many ways. The realism and the tension drive this along. And within, the toe reference gives a micro view of the macro story.

    • Thanks so much Leila.
I always take any form of the word ‘real’ as the biggest of compliments.
      Oh, I edited the comma.
      All the very best.
